Grading Scale and Criteria

Marching Season:

Grading will be based on the following:
Attendance (10%) 10 points daily
This includes being on time to all daily classes, required sectionals, and any other required scheduled rehearsals.

Daily Preparation/Participation (20%) 10 points daily
Bringing all required materials to rehearsal (i.e.: instrument, music, drill folder, pencil), preparing your part for every rehearsal, doing your best to improve your marching show every rehearsal, and having a positive impact on the other members of the band.

Playing Tests (40%)
All playing tests will be given during daily class rehearsals and/ or sectionals. All students will be expected to practice their music and drill at home and come to rehearsals prepared to perform it accurately!!! Music grades will be earned based on musical accuracy and memorization. Drill grades will be based on marching all individual maneuvers accurately in daily class rehearsals. All students will be expected to play their music and march their drill at a high level of performance. Students should demonstrate improvement on a daily basis.

Performances (30%)
All performances are required of all students. You have had a band calendar since last spring and should have marked these important dates on your home calendar and scheduled around them!!!!!! If you have a performance conflict, a note signed by a parent must be given to
Mr. Jarve no later than three weeks prior to the performance. Any conflict other than an emergency or death in the family will be considered unexcused, resulting in your grade being lowered one letter grade. Band is a team effort and everyone is crucial to the success of the group!

You will earn an “A” if you:
1. Perform your entire show accurately, musically and memorized.
2. Perform your entire guard show accurately.
3. Earn a 90% or higher cumulative grade point average for the 9-weeks.

Playing Tests (40%)
All playing tests will be given during daily class rehearsals and/or additional sectionals. All students will be expected to practice ALL of their music every day at home in preparation for each rehearsal. Music grades will be earned based on musical accuracy, endurance, and consistent improvement. All students will be expected to play their music at a high level of performance.

Other pertinent information:

*Every student will be required to use a metronome in daily practice!!!

*All students are responsible for keeping the band room clean and organized, especially your personal instrument/folder locker. Personal items should not be left in your locker!!! This will also impact your final 9-week grade.

*You are responsible for keeping your instrument in good-working order!!!

*There is no food, drink, or candy allowed in the band room without Mr. Jarve’s permission!!! Again, this will impact your grade.

*ALL passes to and from class must be filled out in your student handbook! You are responsible for getting it filled out BEFORE class starts, not after!!!
