The FAQs!!!!

What is an informal audition?

An informal audition is done during the school day, in your normal choir, at the end of the school year.  Students sing alone, but in a practice room, so no one else has to hear you.  Students will be expected to sing some simple warm-up exercises, sight-read, read rhythms, and sing part of a song learned in choir.

What is a formal audition?

A formal audition takes place outside of the normal school day.  After informal auditions are finished, a call back list will be posted.  The students who are called to formal auditions will have a twenty-four hour piece to learn.  During the audition, students will be expected to sing alone, in pairs, in quartets and other combinations.  A different formal audition will take place for each of Honors Ensemble and Men’s Ensemble.  Students may be called back for one or both choirs.  A final list will not be posted until both formal auditions have been completed.  See below for Serenade and Troubadours audition information.

How do you audition for Men’s Ensemble?

Students sign up for an individual, after-school time slot, which will be followed by a group audition.  This will take place in one day.  A final list will be posted within a few days.

Do I have to prepare a solo piece?

You do not have to prepare a solo piece.  Usually students sing a part of a song learned in choir or a patriotic song.  However, students who take private voice lessons often choose to sing a solo piece that they have worked on privately.  Either is fine.

I like to sing, but I don’t want to sing alone.  Do I have to sing alone in choir?

You may have to sing alone for informal auditions, but no one else will hear them.  Otherwise, the choice to sing solo is left up to the individual.
