MSVMA Information

MSVMA is the Michigan School Vocal Music Association.  This is the state school organization that we will participate with throughout the whole year.  Festivals or large group activities include the following:

Choir festivals are held yearly and are a time when groups from all over Michigan meet and perform for three adjudicators who then give the groups comments and ratings of I, II, III or IV.  The choirs sing one required song and one chosen song.  Then the group must sight read a selected unknown piece of music.  The ratings are then averaged into a final rating.  The festival is required of all choir members when their particular group attends and participates in the festival.

Solo & Ensemble festivals are not required but strongly encouraged.  Students may perform a solo or with a small group (up to 16 members) for adjudicators and receive ratings similar to those given at choir festivals.  Fees are usually $10 - $15 per event, plus an accompanist fee (usually $35.00).  We have a library of solo, duet and small group music that you can check out and use at Solo & Ensemble festival.  Talk to the director about using the library.  You will also have an opportunity to perform at a Pre-Solo & Ensemble Recital and possibly at our Spring Concert.  This year your entry fee must be received by early December.

Honors Choirs are chosen by audition and are made up of the very best singers in the state.  Rehearsals are held in various cities in Michigan and it is the student's responsibility to make transportation arrangements.  Students must be responsible for learning their own music for honors choir events (although the director may help a little!).  The regional rehearsals and performance as well as auditions for the state level will be held in December.  The state level rehearsals and performance as well as all-state level auditions will be held in January.  The all-state event will be held in May at a youth arts festival.  It is a great honor to be chosen as a member of the honors choir!
